On the bubbling dynamics of binary mixtures of powders in 2D gas-solid fluidized beds

2012

Abstract The bubbling behavior of fluidized beds has been thoroughly investigated in the last decades by means of several techniques (e.g. X-ray, Inductance, Resistance and Impedance based techniques). In recent years, Digital Image Analysis Techniques have shown their potential for accurate and cost effective measurements. Most of the works related to the experimental analysis of bubble behavior in the field of gas-solid fluidization actually deal with monodispersed particles although almost all industrial equipments operate with mixtures of particles. Among the works available in literature dealing with mixtures of particles having different diameters and/or densities, most of them aim at…

Phase behaviour of deionized binary mixtures of charged colloidal spheres.

2009

We review recent work on the phase behaviour of binary charged sphere mixtures as a function of particle concentration and composition. Both size ratios and charge ratios are varied over a wide range. By contrast to hard spheres the long ranged Coulomb interaction stabilizes the crystal phase at low particle concentrations and shifts the occurrence of amorphous solids to particle concentrations considerably larger than the freezing concentration. Depending on size- and charge ratios we observe upper azeotrope, spindle, lower azeotrope and eutectic types of phase diagrams, all known well from metal systems. Most solids are of body centred cubic structure. Occasionally stoichiometric compound…

Binary Mixtures of Ionic Liquids: A Joint Approach to Investigate their Properties and Catalytic Ability

2012

The growing interest in the properties and applications of ionic liquids has recently led to research into the possibility of using their binary mixtures. This work reports on the effects of binary mixtures of ionic liquids on the outcome of organic reactions such as the mononuclear rearrangement of heterocycles and the solvatochromic behavior of Nile Red. Binary mixtures formed by ionic liquids differing in the structure of the cation and the anion are taken into account. In particular, ionic liquids such as 1-benzyl-3- butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, 1-(2,3,4,5,6- pentafluorobenzyl)-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, and 1-benzyl-3-butylimidazolium…

On the characterization of some [bmim][X]/co-solvent binary mixtures: a multidisciplinary approach by using kinetic, spectrophotometric and conductom…

2008

Abstract In order to study the intrinsic characteristics and to evaluate the structural variations determined by the addition of a co-solvent to 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF 4 ]) we examined the behaviour of some probes in [bmim][BF 4 ]/co-solvent binary mixtures. The rate constants of the piperidino-catalyzed rearrangement of the Z -phenylhydrazone of the 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole into the relevant 4-benzoylamino-2,5-diphenyl-1,2,3-triazole as well as the spectrometric properties of pyrene and Nile Red were evaluated. With the same purpose also 1 H NMR and conductivity measurements were carried out. By comparison the behaviour of 1-butyl-3-methylimidaz…

Ionic liquid binary mixtures: How different factors contribute to determine their effect on the reactivity

2016

We studied how mixing ionic liquids affected the rate of the Diels Alder reaction between 9-anthracenemethanol and N-ethylmaleimide. The mixtures considered spanned the whole compositional range and differed for the anion or the cation. These comprised mixtures of the ionic liquid 1-benzyl-3-butyl-imidazolium bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([Bzbim][NTf2]) with 1-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-3-butyl-imidazolium bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([Bz(F5)bim][NTf2]) or 1-benzyl-3-butyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bzbim][BF4]). Moreover we studied the reaction in a set of mixtures containing an aliphatic and an aromatic cation, namely [Bzbim+] and N-butyltriethylammonium ([bEt3N+]) …

Surface-directed spinodal decomposition: Lattice model versus Ginzburg-Landau theory

2009

When a binary mixture is quenched into the unstable region of the phase diagram, phase separation starts by spontaneous growth of long-wavelength concentration fluctuations ("spinodal decomposition"). In the presence of surfaces, the latter provide nontrivial boundary conditions for this growth. These boundary conditions can be derived from lattice models by suitable continuum approximations. But the lattice models can also be simulated directly, and thus used to clarify the conditions under which the Ginzburg–Landau type theory is valid. This comparison shows that the latter is accurate only in the immediate vicinity of the bulk critical point, if thermal fluctuations can also be neglecte…

Ionic liquid binary mixtures: Promising reaction media for carbohydrate conversion into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

2014

Abstract The conversion of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) has been studied in binary mixtures of ionic liquids (ILs), using strongly acidic resin Amberlyst 15 as the catalyst. In particular, both mono- and disaccharides, such as fructose, glucose and sucrose have been investigated. Considering the favorable effect exerted by chloride-based ionic liquids in the dissolution of carbohydrates, we used binary mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim][Cl]) with [bmim + ] based ionic liquids differing in size, shape and coordination ability of the anion ([bmim][BF 4 ], [bmim][N(CF 3 SO 2 ) 2 ], [bmim][N(CN) 2 ], [bmim][SbF 6 ] and [bmim][CF 3 SO 3 ]). Carbohydrat…

Gas-Fluidization Characteristics of Binary Mixtures of Particles in 2D Geometry

2012

The bubbling behaviour of fluidized beds has been thoroughly investigated in the last decades by means of several techniques, e.g. X-ray, Inductance, Resistance and Impedance based techniques, PIV. In recent years, Digital Image Analysis Techniques have shown their potential for accurate and cost effectively measurements. Most of the work related to bubble behaviour analysis deals with single-sized particles, while almost all industrial equipment operates with multi-sized particles. Although considerable work has been done in the past with focus on the analysis of the mixing-segregation behaviour and predictions of fluid dynamics regime transitions, a lack of knowledge still exists in the an…

Liquid structure of dibutyl sulfoxide

2016

We present experimental (X-ray diffraction) data on the structure of liquid dibutyl sulfoxide at 320 K and rationalise the data by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Not unexpectedly, DBSO bearing a strong dipolar moiety and two medium length, apolar butyl chains, this compound was characterised by a distinct degree of polar vs. apolar structural differentiation at the nm spatial scale, which was fingerprinted by a low Q peak in its X-ray diffraction pattern. Similar to, but to a larger extent than its shorter chain family members (such as DMSO), DBSO was also characterised by an enhanced dipole-dipole correlation, which was responsible for a moderate Kirkwood correlation factor as we…
